Arts Alive invites visual artists on a field trip to local painter Jeanne Maguire Thieme’s Pipe Dream Studio in Swanzey, NH. The artist field trip will take place on Saturday, July 29th from 10AM-12PM.

Each year, Thieme opens her home studio in Swanzey on Columbus Day weekend as part of the Fall Foliage Art Studio Tour. Pastel artist Gill Truslow and ceramicist Forrest Bencivenga join her to transform her studio, deck, living room, and porch into a three-artist gallery. The three will discuss the benefits and logistics of this collaboration that has resulted in increased exposure and sales. Conversation topics will range from how the artists set up their work and respect each others’ space, to how they publicize the event, manage payments, and prepare refreshments for visitors. This event is designed for visual artists and crafters to learn about the benefits of peer collaboration as a way to publicize and increase exposure of their work. Light refreshments will be available. Space is limited at field trip venues. Registration is required.

Arts Alive Field Trips provide a laid-back atmosphere to spark friendly connection, exploration, and creative inspiration. During these events, artists dive into local arts spaces and businesses to explore available resources and opportunities for community-building, learning, and professional growth. Coffee, tea, and light bites are a staple at these trips.

Previous field trips explored new and old arts spaces in the New Hampshire towns of Dublin, Keene, and Jaffrey, as well as in Brattleboro, Vermont. Locations included the Hannah Grimes Gallery, DublinArts & Muse Gallery, MAXT Makerspace’s Ceramics Center, 17ROX Artist Studios, the Keene Public Library, the Jaffrey Civic Center, The Park Theatre, Mitchell Giddings Fine Arts, and First Proof Press.

Arts Alive developed Artist Field Trips in response to a November 2022 survey designed to gauge interest in programming for the upcoming year. The Arts Alive community expressed desires for networking, skill-building, artistic inspiration, and support in learning how to run a successful creative business.

Through short, anonymous surveys evaluating each field trip, answers to the question What was the best thing about this event? Include:

  • “Learning about the artists and organizations in our community.”
  • “Meeting other people involved in the arts and comparing stories.”
  • “Meeting artists and exchanging creative ideas for new projects.”
  • “Seeing studios and artists and spaces. Sharing thoughts.”
  • “Connecting with other artists.”

Field Trips are $10 to cover the cost of refreshments and $5 for Arts Alive members. Limited space is available on this July field trip.
