HURDY GURDY AND FLUTE COMBINE FOR CHILDREN’S WORKSHOP AND ADULT CONCERT AT MARIPOSA

THIS WEEKEND

PETERBOROUGH, N.H. — On Saturday, Aug. 26th,  at 1 p.m., an interactive family workshop and concert at the Mariposa Museum will offer children and families a rare chance to discover the hurdy gurdy, a musical instrument dating back to the European Renaissance and flute. The workshop is free for children who must be accompanied by at least one adult. Adult admission is $8 for non-members.

A concert for adults featuring the hurdy gurdy and flute, with a program blending Renaissance and Mediterranean music, will be held at the Mariposa  Sunday,  Aug. 27th at 3 p.m. Adult admission is $20 and children are $10. Mariposa members are free.

The two events feature the formidable talents of Saüc Ensemble, comprised of master musicians Sergio Gonzalez, an internationally-renowned hurdy gurdy player and teacher, and flautist Daïna Mateu. Both musicians are from Spain.

The hurdy gurdy is a string instrument that produces sound via a hand crank that turns a rosined wheel rubbing against the strings. The wheel functions much like a violin bow, and single notes played on the instrument sound similar to those played on a violin. Melodies are played on a keyboard, pressing tangents — small wedges made of wood or metal — against one or more of the strings to change pitch. Like other acoustic stringed instruments, it has a sound board and hollow cavity to amplify the sound.

Sunday’s concert will blend sounds of East and West in dialogue, exploring how music and culture of the European Renaissance and multicultural Mediterranean worlds influenced each other.

The Mariposa Museum, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization located at 26 Main Street in Peterborough, NH, fosters peace and understanding across cultural borders through exhibits, programs, and educational offerings to schools. The museum is wheelchair-accessible.
